If we liked Charleston, we LOVED Savannah. The Savannah website says: “The Historic District of Savannah is the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with cobblestone streets, manicured gardens, and oak-shaded parks drizzling with silvery Spanish Moss. The largest National Historic Landmark District in the United States, Savannah contains more than twenty city squares filled with museums, monuments, antebellum mansions, magnificent churches, and famous forts of the Revolutionary & Civil War eras.” That says it all. We walked by Paula Deen’s “The Lady and Sons” restaurant (see the sign to the right of the first picture) and it was booked for lunch and the shop was packed with people. It would have been fun to eat there, but obviously it is required to get reservations ahead. There was music in the pedestrian mall with many of the restaurants, and most of the shops were “dog friendly” allowing Blanco to come in, too, so we loved the city!
Today we visited both Saint Simons and Jekyll Islands. The website on Saint Simons says: “St. Simons Island, one of the famed and fabled Golden Isles that grace this corner of Georgia's coast, is especially alluring. Visitors come year 'round to swim, sail, fish, and walk along St. Simons' lovely beaches, to challenge its 99 holes of golf and acres of tennis courts, to wander its enchanted historic sites, and to explore the Island's countless quaint shops and fine restaurants. All amid gloriously mild weather year 'round.” The homes on the island are hidden behind a great deal of foliage, but what you can see is gorgeous. It is very “tasteful” in that there are only the shops needed and not all the “big box” stores you see in many resorts.
Jekyll Island only has the historic homes of the original families who started the island club, a few current hotels, and some historic hotels. As the website says: “Midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, is a remarkable island retreat, Jekyll Island, Georgia. Explore miles of barrier island beaches and dune lines edging unbothered woodlands. Discover an enchanting riverfront National Historic Landmark District. Enjoy nature-based pursuits like marsh eco-tours, dolphin-watching, sea turtle walks, or bird watching. The active visitor can golf, kayak, play tennis or soccer, bike, and play at Summer Waves Park. The historian can learn of Jekyll’s rich gilded era”. The middle photo shows the unspoiled beaches on the island and the last is of the beautiful Jekyll Island Club Hotel. There was actually a couple playing croquet on a manicured lawn dressed in all white. This was the site Saturday of a meeting of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Alan Greenspan, and others. We walked by the “Federal Reserve conference” room which they called “the temporary convention center on Jekyll Island” in the news. Jekyll Island was the summer place for early industrialists such as J. P. Morgan, the Goodyears, and the Rockefellers.
One thing we have seen in South Carolina and Georgia is that the bridges are all named for probably the politician who was able to get the money for the bridge. But what surprised us was when we came to the “______ memorial intersection”!
